Stockholm was founded where the lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea

Stockholm, the Capital of Scandinavia, is a city that seems to float upon water. It is built on 14 islands, with 57 bridges.
Stockholm is the largest urban area in the Nordic countries. There are 1 million inhabitants in the city proper,
2.4 million in the larger metropolitan area.
Outside the city, in the Baltic Sea, the vast archipelago of 30.000 islands is waiting for you.
Stockholm is a city of many museums, design, creativity, music, culture, clean air and waters, and aims at being fossil fuel free by 2040.
Stockholm City
- shop 'til you drop

In the shopping district of Stockholm city you can find IKEA and the two large department stores NK and Åhléns City and numerous other shops, nice cafes and restaurants.
The square Sergels torg ("Sergel's Square") was constructed in the 1960s, to mark the heart of modern Stockholm.
The square is centred around a roundabout and a 37 metre tall obelisk in glass and steel.
The site south of the square is taken up by the cultural centre Kulturhuset which also harbours the Stockholm City Theatre and hides the Bank of Sweden´s headquarters behind it.
Cobblestone streets and low 18th century wooden houses in Södermalm

For centuries Södermalm, the Southern Island, was hard to access, because it was hilly and mountainous, rural and agricultural.
From the mid 17th century and onwards workers and their families gradually moved in, creating a mixture of wooden houses and narrow streets. Soon overccrowding and poor housing, disease and vermin turned Södermalm into a "slum". Today, Södermalm is an extremely attractive residential area. A cool place to live.
Some small red painted cottages from the 17th and 18th centuries can still be seen in some areas of Södermalm, for example in Skinnarviksparken and Åsöberget.
Stockholmers
are bilingual and digitalised

Stockholm is a nearly cash-free city.
It is unusual that a restaurant, supermarket or shop will accept cash.
It is much easier to use a card or Apple, Samsung och Google Pay.
Generally, swedes are very digitalised. Most things in life are managed on a mobile phone or a laptop.
You will also find that everyone speaks English.
Swedes start studying English in school before the age of 10.
English has been a compulsory subject since the late 1940s.
A majority of Swedes, especially those born after World War II, understand and speak English.
Polar magic in the middle of summer

Do you want to know what -5°C (23°F) feels like? The ICEBAR Stockholm offers you crispy cool air, ice art and cocktails at the same time. The interior design is made by real ice from the river Torneälven in the far north of Sweden.
While in the bar you will wear a thermo-cape and gloves to keep you warm, and to protect the ice from your body heat. The entrance fee includes a drink from a glass made of ice, and a 45 minute stay. You will find the ICEBAR at Vasaplan 4.
